Is JUBEL Beer Gluten Free? Ingredients, Testing and What to Check

Yes—JUBEL states that its beer is gluten-free. The brewery uses malted barley, then adds an enzyme during brewing to break down gluten proteins. It says every batch is tested before and after packaging, and it does not release beer measuring above 10 parts per million (ppm) of gluten.

If you’ve seen JUBEL on a pub tap or picked up one of its colourful cans, the barley ingredient might seem confusing. Here’s how a barley-based beer can carry a gluten-free label, and what that means when choosing a drink.

How can JUBEL be gluten-free if it contains barley?

There are two main routes to gluten-free beer: brewing with naturally gluten-free ingredients, or reducing gluten in beer made from cereals such as barley.

JUBEL uses the second approach. Its gluten-free description relates to the finished beer, rather than the absence of barley from the recipe.

Coeliac UK explains that beer labelled gluten-free must contain 20ppm of gluten or less. Barley-based gluten-removed beers must still declare barley on the label. Consequently, “gluten-free” and “contains barley” can both be correct. Coeliac UK’s guidance

What does “parts per million” mean?

Parts per million describes a very small concentration. In this context, 20ppm is equivalent to 20 milligrams of gluten per kilogram of product.

Gluten-free therefore does not necessarily mean absolutely zero gluten. It means the product meets the defined gluten-free threshold. JUBEL’s stated release limit of 10ppm is below that threshold.

Is JUBEL suitable for people with coeliac disease?

Coeliac UK recognises both naturally gluten-free and gluten-removed beers that meet the gluten-free standard as options for a gluten-free diet. JUBEL markets its beer as gluten-free and publishes its testing approach. Coeliac UK’s alcohol guidance

Check the current label for the exact product you’re buying. If you have specific medical advice about gluten-removed beer, follow that advice and ask your dietitian if you’re unsure.

Is gluten-free the same as barley-free?

No. JUBEL is brewed with barley. A gluten-free claim should not be treated as confirmation that a drink is suitable for someone with a barley allergy.

For any food allergy, check the full allergen information and discuss suitability with your allergy clinician when needed. The Food Standards Agency advises checking labels and making your specific allergy clear when ordering. FSA advice for consumers

What about JUBEL served on draught?

When ordering at a pub or bar, ask staff to confirm the exact beer and its current allergen information. If you need to avoid gluten, also ask how the venue manages cross-contact during serving.

The brewery’s product information and the venue’s handling practices are separate considerations. Asking before ordering gives staff the chance to check both. This follows the FSA’s advice to discuss dietary requirements and cross-contamination with food businesses. FSA guidance

Is JUBEL vegan, and what does it taste like?

JUBEL also describes its beer as vegan, using a plant-based alternative to fish-derived isinglass finings. Its FAQ lists its beer at 4% ABV—gluten-free does not mean alcohol-free. JUBEL Peach combines lager with a fruity peach flavour.
