2026 is shaping up to be the year of cider. After years of whispers about shrinking alcohol sales and shifts in consumer habits, a frothy new favourite is rising in glasses worldwide. Cider is experiencing an international renaissance, shaking off its traditional image and stepping confidently into the craft and premium drinks scene.

What’s behind the boom? Today’s drinkers, especially younger ones, are seeking beverages that feel both refreshing and authentic. Cider, with its natural roots, bold fruit flavours, and perception as a lighter, more “honest” drink, has emerged as a serious contender.

Cider by the Numbers

A recent report by Grand View Research points to remarkable growth for cider markets across the globe. Europe still holds the crown, accounting for roughly 37% of global sales thanks to its centuries-old cider culture and a new wave of innovation driven by young producers. Meanwhile, Mexico’s cider scene is surprising analysts, with craft makers in Puebla, Chihuahua, and Mexico City creating distinctive, artisanal blends that reflect regional flavours.

In Asia-Pacific, the story is even bigger. The market there is forecast to grow at nearly 6% each year, led by curious, adventurous drinkers in China and India. As disposable incomes rise, so does the demand for inventive, premium ciders that stand out from the crowd.

Celebrating the Craft: The International Cider Awards

This global cider surge is getting the recognition it deserves at this year’s International Cider Awards, returning to Manchester from 3–5 March 2026, with results and trade day festivities on 6 March.

Often hailed as the most authentic cider competition in the world, the Awards bring together professional cider makers from every continent where apples grow. Chair of Judges, Gabe Cook, better known as The Ciderologist, calls it “the world’s truest global competition” and for good reason. Judges aren’t just industry insiders; they’re practising cider makers who understand the precision, creativity, and balance that define great cider.

Unlike other competitions rushing to taste dozens of entries in a day, the International Cider Awards take time to get it right. Each entry is tasted at its ideal temperature, carefully assessed, and given the consideration it deserves. Medals (Gold, Silver, and Bronze) are awarded across nine categories, ensuring both traditional and experimental styles get their moment to shine.

Why It Matters

Cider’s comeback isn’t just a trend; it’s part of a bigger shift toward authenticity, craft, and community in the drinks world. From independent orchards in Europe to bustling new taprooms in Mexico and Asia, cider is reminding the world that simplicity, when done right, can still sparkle.

Here’s to cider in 2026: bold, global, and as refreshing as ever.
